Coffee- Whats the Buzz?

Walking into the kitchen each morning, groggy and barely awake, I immediately reach for the coffee pot. For 64% of Americans, this is a reality. As a high school student, I have to wake up much too early in the morning, and I go to bed way too late, and for many adults will full time jobs, this is their everyday routine too. Coffee is what gets people through their days almost every day. Typically, I will wake up in the morning anticipating my warm (or cold) cup of joe. Here I will explain the different types of coffee to choose from, benefits and downsides of coffee, and what it is all about.

Coffee is the number one drink consumed by Americans, even more than bottled water.  There are many different kinds of coffee for all to enjoy. However, with coffee shops popping up in every city, town, and even grocery stores, every shop makes their coffee different. How could you possibly choose just one drink off of the seemingly endless menu? All the different choices and variations can make it overwhelming for any customer to decide what drink to order. The most basic type of coffee is the hot brew, just hot water run through ground coffee beans. Then, there’s the different variations of milk coffees such as cappuccino, americano, latte, macchiato, and espresso. The difference between the types of milk coffee’s is the amount of foam, milk, and espresso in each drink. All your standard drinks are on the menu, then there’s also specialty drinks to choose from, such as frappuccinos and hot chocolates. Or perhaps the customer is more of a tea person, then they can get tea drinks of all sorts. Though it depends on the person and the preference, you can almost always find something that you will fall in love with at every coffee shop.

Since there’s such high rates of consumption in America it begs a question: Are there any disadvantages? Over 400 million cups of coffee are consumed everyday, and with every cup comes with some risks. Consumption of coffee may increase your risk of heart attacks, high blood pressure, and insomnia. Also, as you get older, coffee can get much worse for your bones and metabolism .

With all these downsides, there must be some positive effects. According to, coffee lowers your risk of type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and depression/suicide. The benefits are numerous, and even according to one website, can help you live longer. Personally, I feel much happier once I’ve had my coffee in the morning and it helps lower my stress.

No matter where you live, I think most people worldwide can agree that coffee is a staple in everyday life. The boost of energy and delicious taste makes it hard to give up, not that many want to. The many pros and cons make it difficult to determine which outways the other, but either way, Americans are not going to give it up anytime soon.
